VoIP means Voice-over Internet-Protocol. Simply put, you can make phone calls over the internet using any kind of digital device that has a speaker, microphone, and the internet. When you use a regular analog phone the voice packets travel in the same order as they went out. So, usually the quality of a regular land-line phone call is clear and without pauses. Since hosted voip phone calls use the internet, each phone call is transferred digitally across the web. Some voice packets can arrive faster or out-of-order. QoS deals with prioritizing those voice packets, making sure they get back together in the right order so that your hosted voip phone calls are clear, quality phone conversations. QoS happens very quickly of course, but it is also very important to choose a hosted voip provider that has a good QoS.

SIP has to do with the beginning of a hosted voip phone call and the ending of a hosted voip phone call.
Hosted voip has received a lot of negative reviews throughout the years because of those people and businesses that use hosted voip with regular broadband. Because voip uses the internet it uses some of the bandwidth of the business internet services. When a business has employees download and stream from the internet or browse the internet, this uses up bandwidth and cuts into the hosted voip phone call quality, making a hosted voip phone call choppy.
When using hosted voip you must be aware of your internet services and bandwidth. If you have choppy or low quality hosted voip phone calls, the problem is most likely with your choice of internet services or internet bandwidth available.
